The outer rain bands of Hurricane Dorian are now affecting the southern maritimes as it continues as it continues to accelerate toward Nova Scotia.
According to Environment Canada, the storm is expected to make landfall this evening near Halifax as a category one hurricane.
Severe winds and heavy rain are in store for parts of Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec.
Hurricane force wind warnings are in effect for most Atlantic waters, storm warnings are in effect for other waters in the Maritimes.
For Newfoundland, hurricane force wind warnings are in effect for eastern Gulf of St. Lawrence waters, storm force warnings for the southwest and northeast coasts, and the strait of Belle Isle.
Storm surge warnings are in effect for the north shore of Prince Edward Island, western Cape Breton, the Magdalen Islands, Quebec's Lower Quebec North Shore, and Anticosti Island.
Waves of 7 to 10 metres will reach the Southwestern Shore of Nova Scotia during the day and spread to the Eastern Shore tonight. These waves will likely reach southern Newfoundland by Sunday morning with waves nearing 12 metres.
Nova Scotia Emergency Management provided an update today about the coming storm. Officials said that they expect the weather to deteriorate throughout the day.
Nova Scotia Power said that they have prepared to respond to impacts of the hurricane. Their crews will have to stand down as the storm progresses, but will be ready to respond as soon as it is safe to do so.
Police have also prepared for the event, and have called in additional resources and have several contingency plans in place.
They’re reminding people to stay off the roads, listen to directions of civil authorities, and to pay attention to emergency alerts.
