Mark Carney has been elected as the Liberal Party of Canada’s new leader after earning 85.9% of the leadership race vote.
Carney had been the favourite for quite some time and today comes as no surprise after numerous Liberal MPs voiced their support for the former Bank of Canada governor.
Chrystia Freeland was the next closest candidate to Carney with 8% of the vote and Karina Gould finished just barely ahead of Frank Baylis.
“Mark Carney and the Liberal team are ready to deliver a strong plan that will grow our economy, stand up to Donald Trump and build a better future for all Canadians,” said Sachit Merha, president of the Liberal Party of Canada.
“After years of following Donald Trump’s playbook and calling Canada "broken," Pierre Poilievre is the wrong choice at the wrong time – and only Mark Carney will defend and protect our country.”
Carney was born in the Northwest Territories and grew up in Edmonton. After heading the Bank of Canada through the 2008 financial crisis, he was recruited to lead the Bank of England in 2013.
During his time in England, Carney led the United Kingdom’s bank through Brexit before he began serving as the United Nations special envoy for climate action and finance in 2019.
Carney is now tasked with preparing the Liberals to take on the Pierre Poilievre-led Conservatives in an election that is likely to occur in the near future.
