Our closest neighbouring planet is set to light up the night sky this month.
The Mars Opposition is perhaps the “biggest sky event of the year,” according to the Farmer’s Almanac.
Mars is heading towards an unusually close approach to Earth on October 6, and will be visible throughout most of the month.
On October 13, Mars will reach its full "opposition," the moment when the sun, Earth and Mars form a straight line in space.
“When a planet reaches opposition, it lies exactly opposite from the sun in Earth's sky: It rises at sunset, reaches its highest point in the sky at midnight, and sets at sunrise,” explains Space.com.
You’ll be able to look up tonight and see the red planet very close to the full moon. It appears just above the moon, from dusk until dawn.
We’ll be able to enjoy two full moons in October, including the Halloween Blue Moon.
