If you bought packaged bread between the start of 2001 and the end of 2021, you’re entitled to compensation.
Canadian shoppers are now able to submit a claim to get their share of a $500-million settlement regarding the alleged industry-wide price fixing of bread.
Strosberg Wingfield Sasso LLP and Orr Taylor LLP confirmed today that the claims process is now open in the approved settlement involving Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and its parent company George Weston Ltd.
No proof of purchase is required for Canadians to get in on the settlement.
It’s available to anyone 18 or older who bought packaged bread for personal use between Jan. 1, 2001, and Dec. 31, 2021.
It doesn’t have to just be bread either, as the purchase of bagged buns, rolls, bagels, naan, English muffins, wraps, pita and tortillas all qualify.
Claims are open until Dec. 12 through this link, but payments aren’t expected to be sent out for six to 12 months.
The exact amount each person receives will depend on how many people apply to split up the $404 million left to be paid out.
The first $96 million was already used through a gift card program Loblaw ran in 2018 and 2019 in hopes of appeasing customers who had been wronged by the price-fixing scandal.
Those who already received a $25 Loblaw card at that time can still submit a new claim now, but will only be paid if there are sufficient settlement funds left over after others are paid.
Most will take their payments by e-transfer, but there is an option to be paid by cheque for a $2 fee to cover the additional costs that come with it.
