The future is coming and it doesn't involve waiting in line at the check-out.
According to Walmart, the mega-store has begun to introduce a pilot program for its new electronic payment processing Scan & Go at 20 stores in Canada.
"The Scan & Go program will allow customers to use a device provided in store to scan their items. It is not an app. Customers can scan their items as they add them to their cart and will then be able to pay for them at checkout," said Walmart in a statement email to KelownaNow.
"This is a pilot program and is currently only available in 20 locations."
The Scan & Go pilot program is new to Canada but has already been used south of the border at Sam’s Clubs for over a year. The electronic payment method also launched last month at one location in Canada for the opening of Walmart’s new Montérégie Supercentre in Longueuil, Quebec.
"The Longueuil prototype will be the first store in Quebec to use the Scan & Go technology. This service will allow customers to pick up a portable barcode scanner as soon as they enter the store. Customers can then start shopping while scanning the items they wish to purchase as they go along. Their itemized receipt will instantly be displayed on the portable scanner, allowing them to keep track of their budget. Once at the checkout, all the customers need to do is proceed with the payment," said Walmart in a press release.
