3. The hot springs

Rejuvenate your body and soul in the healing waters of the Halcyon Hot Springs.

In-house guests have unlimited access to the hot springs from 9 am to 8 pm daily.

The superheated water comes from deep underground and contains a unique combination of minerals including sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and lithium, which are believed to have therapeutic healing properties. Historically, doctors and nurses would sit with their patients in the hot springs.

Local First Nations have been using hot springs for centuries. It was the Sinixt First Nations who helped the founder, Captain Robert Sanderson, locate the source of the springs.

The naturally-sourced water of Halcyon Hot Springs was once bottled as a health tonic and shipped around the globe – it is so pure that it could still be bottled for drinking today.

Three outdoor hot springs pools are open year-round, as well as an outdoor seasonal mineral pool. The amenities include towel service and plush Halcyon robes during your stay.

4. The history

Halcyon Hot Springs has a compelling history that began in 1890.

Founder Sanderson named the hot springs after the Greek myth of the goddess Alcyone, daughter of Aeolus, the ruler of the winds. After her husband drowned in the sea, Alcyone tried to drown herself but was instead transformed into a halcyon bird (European Kingfisher) and carried to her husband by the wind.

The bird was believed to have the power to calm the oceans to protect its eggs while nesting.

Robert Brett and David McPherson, a doctor from Ontario and a politician from Alberta, purchased the property in 1897and doubled the size of Halcyon Hot Springs Resort.

Then, medical doctor and war hero General Frederick Burnham purchased the resort in 1924 with an emphasis on healing and restoration, which created international recognition.

Burnham filled the property with an array of animals including caribou, monkeys, canaries, peacocks, chickens, goats, goldfish, a donkey and a bear named Joe.

The 40-year era of healing and wellness ended when Burnham lost his life by the fire that destroyed the main hotel in 1955.
