The Single Parent Employment Initiative (SPEI) is a program launched in 2015 to help single parents who are receiving income or disability assistance overcome the unique challenges they face in finding long-term and sustainable employment.
The program provides various services and supports to eligible single parents, which include:
Up to two years of funded training: Participants can access training programs that are tailored to help them gain the skills and qualifications needed to secure stable employment.
Paid work experience placement: SPEI offers opportunities for participants to gain practical work experience, which can enhance their employability.
Continued income or disability assistance: Single parents can continue to receive income or disability assistance while they attend training or participate in work experience programs.
Dependent care costs: The program assists with covering the full cost of childcare, even if it exceeds the standard $35 per day, per dependent maximum, through a top-up to the Affordable Child Care Benefit.
Transportation costs: Participants are provided with support for transportation costs, including mileage if they use a private vehicle or public transit costs for commuting to and from their training or work experience.
Exemptions for bursaries, scholarships, and grants: Single parents can retain bursaries, scholarships, and grants they receive for their program of study without affecting their eligibility for the SPEI program.
Employment transitions dependent care: The program offers dependent care support for up to 12 months of employment, which doesn't need to be consecutive months.
Health supplement coverage: Participants are provided with health supplement coverage for a full year after leaving income or disability assistance for employment.
The SPEI program aims to empower single parents to overcome barriers to employment and build a sustainable future for themselves and their families by providing comprehensive assistance and training opportunities.
