The pair were married on this date in 1947 at the iconic Westminster Abbey in London, England.
They met more than a decade earlier, when Princess Elizabeth met Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1934 at Philip’s cousin’s wedding.
In 1937, they met for a second time and crossed paths once again in July 1939, when the 13-year-old Elizabeth fell in love with Philip.
The two began to exchange letters as Philip went off to serve the Royal Navy during the Second World War.
In 1946, Philip asked King George VI for Elizabeth’s hand in marriage, which the King granted providing any formal engagement was delayed until her 21st birthday the following April.
The pair remained secretly engaged for the next year until it was officially announced on July 9th, 1947.
Philip renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles and converted from Greek Orthodoxy to Anglicanism and on the morning of the wedding he was made the Duke of Edinburgh.
Elizabeth gave birth to the couple’s first child, Prince Charles, a year after the wedding and their second child, Princess Anne, was born in 1950.
To celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary, a series of new portraits of the couple were released on Sunday.
The portraits were taken by British photographer Matt Holyoak of Camera Press in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.
