It’s one of those photos that nobody is just skimming by.
It commands attention and it’s now received the honour of World Press Photo of the Year for 2017.
Ronald Schemidt’s incredible image of a protester lit up in flames received the honour at the World Press Photo Foundation’s annual awards show in Amsterdam on Thursday.
The Venezuelan photographer captured the photo during protests against the country’s president, Nicolas Maduro, last year.
"The photo of the year has to tell an event, that is important enough, it also has to bring questions,” explained Magdalena Herrera, chair of the competition’s jury. “it has to engage and has to show a point of view on what happened in the world this year."
“It’s a classical photo, but it has an instantaneous energy and dynamic. The colours, the movement, and it’s very well composed, it has strength. I got an instantaneous emotion.”
Schemidt wasn’t the only winner on Thursday, however, as a number of other photographers were honoured for their amazing work.
