Big White to finish season early due to COVID-19 concerns

Big White is calling last chair a week early on the 2020/2021 ski season.

On Wednesday, the resort announced the news that it will be closing on April 5, citing increased accommodation inquiries from the Lower Mainland and a recent large après ski party at a restaurant on the mountain as reasons for the decision.

"We made the decision to stay open until April 11 back in June of last year,” says Peter Plimmer, President and CEO of Big White Ski Resort Ltd.

“Since then, a lot has changed. In the past week, even more has changed. We are grateful to have been able to keep the resort open and safe as long as we have, but with other resorts shutting down, we have become a magnet for non-local skiers and snowboarders. "

Earlier this week, BC health officials ordered Whistler Blackcomb Resort to close for the next three weeks due to COVID-19 community transmission concerns.

A viral video then emerged from Charley Victoria’s All-Day Après, which is located on Big White, showing a rowdy party with a large crowd of people singing and dancing maskless and in close proximity.

Officials at Big White condemned the video and laid off multiple staff who were witnessed at the party.

While the mountain will be taking a bit of a break, the fun will start up again for the summer season on July 1.
