5 things you need to know this morning: April 16, 2026

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Hodgson says Canada has 'earned the right' to produce oil and gas

Energy Minister Tim Hodgson has said Canada "earned the right to produce" oil and gas because it has worked so hard to reduce "the carbon intensity" of the industry. Speaking to Bloomberg – which asked whether "oil drilling" can be "woke again" – Hodgson said: "A very large percentage of the human population that doesn't want to make the trade off of economic growth for lower carbon.” He was also asked about "leaving oil and gas in the ground," to which he responded: "If you have the luxury of leaving in the ground, God bless you."

2. Canada lost more than $1 trillion in investment during Trudeau's reign: RBC

Sticking to the subject of energy in Canada, the country's biggest bank, RBC, has released a report claiming that more than a trillion dollars of investment left Canada between 2015 and 2024. The capital exodus, coinciding with Justin Trudeau's time as prime minister, was the largest in Canadian history. It adds, however, that new leadership could unlock $1.8 trillion in investment over the next 10 years and "make Canada the G7's growth leader," with oil and gas representing more than $700 billion of that alone.

3. Liberals looking 'very seriously' at banning social media for kids

Heritage Minister Marc Miller has said the Liberal government is "very seriously" considering a ban on social media for children. Miller said that "the grassroots have spoken" on the issue, a reference to Liberal members passing a non-binding resolution on Saturday calling for under-16s to be prohibited from accessing social media.

4. Jet fuel shortage 'worst crisis we've had in aviation,' academic warns

A lecturer at McGill University has warned "we haven't seen nothing yet" when it comes to the effect of the global energy crisis on air travel costs. It comes after the International Energy Agency warned Europe has "maybe six weeks" of jet fuel remaining as conflict in Iran continues to affect supplies. John Gradek, an academic specializing in aviation management at McGill, said it was the "worst crisis we've had in aviation, ever," adding: "without fuel, you can’t fly." He predicted flight cancellations.

5. NDP get $670K of taxpayers' cash after MPs change rules

The NDP is getting a $670,000 boost courtesy of the taxpayer. It comes after the party, which lost official status after a terrible performance in the 2025 election, benefited from a decision by the main political parties to "quietly" change the rules so the NDP could enjoy public funding.
