1. Air Canada flight cancellations begin
The union representing about 10,000 flight attendants issued a strike notice earlier this week. Now, flight cancellations have begun and are expected to ramp up on Friday ahead of the Saturday lockout. The airline company has said refunds and different travel arrangements are being made where possible.

2. China’s tariff on Canadian canola goes into effect.
The 76% duty on Canadian canola products was announced earlier this week. It goes into effect Thursday. The duty comes a year after China began an anti-dumping investigation, which was in response to Canada's tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. Farmers and premiers in the Prairies are asking Ottawa to step in.

3. Overtime pay crackdown in 2 BC health authorities
Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health have reportedly started cracking down on pay for staff who take on last minute work. The move comes after BC’s Ministry of Health announced a review of the provincial Health Services Authority in an effort to cut down on costs while prioritizing patient care.

4. Advanced voting in Poilievre’s Alberta by-election on par with general election
An estimated 14,454 electors turned out to the polls during four advance voting days in the Battle River-Crowfoot. The ballot had over 200 names on it, prompting Elections Canada to launch a special write-in ballot. The election was called earlier this summer as a Conservative MP stepped down to allow Poilievere to attempt to regain a seat in Parliament. Voting day is Aug. 18.

5. Soccer legend Thomas Muller arrives in Vancouver
The Whitecaps’ latest star arrived at YVR this week. He was met by hoards of fans. Earlier this month it was announced that the 35-year-old German had left Bayern Munich after 17 seasons to join Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the MLS. He signed for the remainder for the 2025 season with a designated player option next year.
