1. Carney to make Canadian Armed Forces announcement in Trenton

The prime minister is set to make an announcement about the Canadian Armed Forces today. Mark Carney, who has signed Canada up to a defence spending target of five per cent, said yesterday he will be working on "building security and defence" during the visit to Trenton, Ontario.


2. Quebec minister warns of two-tier justice after drug trafficker's sentence reduced because of his race

The Quebec minister responsible for fighting racism has warned that the province risks creating "two types of citizen: one that is racialized and one that isn't" after a drug trafficker's sentence was reduced because of his skin colour. Christopher Skeete said: “The fight against racism has always been one about equality under the law, yet here, we’re actually well intentioned but creating inequality."


3. Israel could end military cooperation with UK, Canada over recognition of Palestine: report

Israel could end its military cooperation with the UK if British Prime Minister Keir Starmer goes ahead with his pledge to recognize Palestine, according to a report in The Times newspaper. An anonymous source told the paper that Britain "and other countries considering diplomatic recognition" – which includes Canada – should "carefully consider" the consequences of going ahead with their plans.


4. CBC reporter accused of uttering falsehoods in train-wreck interview

More despatches from the wacky world of the CBC, where a reporter based in Kamloops has been accused of uttering falsehoods during a train-wreck interview with a professor last year. In a chat about residential schools with Frances Widdowson, a former politics professor, reporter Jordan Tucker says "there have been over 6,000 bodies found at this point." The recording has been publicized by opponents of the CBC, including the journalist Candice Malcolm, who wrote: "This is why we MUST REPLACE the CBC." CBC lists Tucker as a "former journalist" at the state broadcaster.


5. OpenAI blows Grok away in AI chess final

OpenAI has defeated Grok in the final of an AI chess tournament. The firm's o3 model was unbeaten throughout the contest, with Google's Gemini coming third.
