5 things you need to know this morning: Dec. 21, 2020

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Many countries ban travel to the UK after COVID-19 mutation

Canada is one of many countries that has put a temporary pause of flights from the United Kingdom. It comes after a faster-spreading mutation of COVID-19 was found in the UK, which is also linked to at least one case in the Netherlands. The Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, Germany and India have also banned flights from the UK.

2. Ontario looking at a province-wide lockdown ahead of Christmas

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to announce new public health measures today amid a climbing number of COVID-19 cases and an increasing strain on hospitals. According to CBC, restrictions announced today will put the province in a very similar spot it was in this past spring, when most of the country initially shut down due to COVID-19.

3. Canucks training camp begins in just over 2 weeks

Details regarding the upcoming NHL season were ironed out and agreed to this weekend, which means hockey is right around the corner. The Vancouver Canucks will open training camp on Sunday, Jan. 3, giving the team just over a week to prepare before the regular season gets going on Wednesday, Jan. 13!

4. Look for the ‘Christmas Star’ in the sky tonight

Stargazers should have something special to see in the sky if the weather cooperates tonight. Tonight, Jupiter and Saturn will converge to be at their closest proximity in 800 years. Together, they’ll appear as a single bright star in the sky, just over the southwest horizon shortly after sunset.

5. Hockey practice in Ottawa led to 89 cases of COVID-19

A lot of people were unhappy when the Government of BC adult team sports recently, but a recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Ottawa shows why. In November, a single asymptomatic person showing up at an indoor hockey practice led to 89 cases of COVID-19 and 445 high-risk contacts. It’s being used as an illustration regarding how fast the virus can spread.
