Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Canadian woman in critical condition after ‘rogue wave’ incident on Mexican honeymoon

Cory Moe’s honeymoon in Mexico was supposed to be one of the happiest trips of her life, but it ended prematurely with her in hospital. The 26-year-old Saskatchewan woman was sent to the ICU after being critically injured by a “rogue wave” while boogie boarding on the third day of the trip. She suffered a cervical spine injury and it could be weeks before she is able to travel home to Canada. A GoFundMe has been created to help the couple with costs.

2. COVID-19 misinformation contributed to 2,800 Canadian deaths, report claims

A new report from the Council of Canadian Academies says misinformation that led to people not believing COVID-19 was real, or was being exaggerated, contributed to more than 2,800 Canadian deaths and at least $300 million in hospital and ICU visits. The report estimates that vaccine hesitancy affected more than 2.35-million people between March and November 2021.

3. China’s ‘North Pole’ sees record-setting -53°C

The Chinese city of Mohe, known as the country’s “North Pole,” recorded a record-low temperature of -53°C on Sunday. While the frigid temperatures broke the city’s previous record of -52.3°C, set in 1969, it was still shy of China’s national record of -58°C, which was set in the city of Genhe in 2009.

4. Fast-food giants spending millions to block minimum wage legislation

Fast-food giants like McDonald’s, In-N-Out Burger, Starbucks and Chipotle have each donated $1 million to Save Local Restaurants, a coalition opposing a law that would see California introduce minimum wages up to $22 an hour for fast-food employees. California’s secretary of state announced on Tuesday that a petition to stop the law’s implementation had gathered enough signatures to qualify for a vote on the state’s 2024 general election ballot.

5. Razzies apologize for putting 12 year old on list of worst actress nominees

A satire awards show that bills itself as celebrating the best of the worst in cinema has apologized and removed child actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong from their annual list of worst actress nominees. Moving forward, The Razzies will only nominate those who are 18 years of age or older.
