Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Police ID teen suspect in shooting death of woman in downtown Hamilton

An arrest warrant has been issued for 17-year-old Mackale Lavoie, accused of fatally shooting 26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie in downtown Hamilton early Friday evening. Police say Sarkodie, originally from Ghana, was an “innocent bystander” as Lavoie allegedly fired shots at a group of three people who were his intended targets.

2. Antisemitic posts appear on Elmo’s X account following hack

Elmo’s X account was hacked on Sunday night. The beloved “Sesame Street” character appeared to post expletive-filled antisemitic rants calling for violence against Jews and demanded the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein’s case. The posts have since been deleted, but have been preserved through widely-circulated screenshots.

3. Wildfire destroys historic Grand Canyon Lodge and more in Arizona

A fast-moving wildfire has destroyed a historic lodge and dozens of other structures on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, forcing officials to close access to the area for the season. Park Superintendent Ed Keable said the Grand Canyon Lodge was consumed by flames, while the park confirmed that “numerous” other historic cabins in the area were destroyed.

4. Sinner defeats Alcaraz in Wimbledon final

Jannik Sinner won his first Wimbledon title on Sunday, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in a four-set final. It’s the seventh straight Grand Slam title won by either Sinner or Alcaraz. In the woman’s final on Saturday, Iga Świątek dominated Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0. It was just the second Grand Slam final to be won without losing a game, following Steffi Graf’s French Open win in 1988.

5. Four dead after small plane crashes near London airport

UK police have confirmed that four people are dead following a plane crash near London’s Southend Airport on Sunday. Work is ongoing to identify the victims, but police say none of them are British. The 23-metre turboprop plane came down moments after takeoff from the airport.
