5 things you need to know this morning: July 21, 2023

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Tony Bennett dies at 96

Acclaimed singer Tony Bennett has died. He was 96 years old, two weeks short of his birthday. With dozens of albums and countless hits, Bennett won 20 Grammy Awards during his decades-long career. He was once called “the best singer in the business” by the legendary Frank Sinatra.

2. Canadian women begin World Cup with draw against Nigeria

It’s a game that Canada would have liked to exit with three points, and they certainly had chances to do so, but in the end it was a 0-0 draw against Nigeria to begin the Women’s World Cup. Christine Sinclair had the best chance of the match for the Canadians, but she was denied on a penalty shot in the 50th minute. Next up for Canada is Ireland, which will be a 5 am PT kickoff on Wednesday, July 26.

3. Canadian-born doctor gets licence to practise in Canada after 17-month fight

Dr. Stephanie DeMarchi can finally practise as a family doctor in Canada after a lengthy battle with medical licensing authorities. The Canadian-born family doctor trained and worked in Australia for the past decade, but applied to the Medical Council of Canada to have her foreign credentials recognized in April 2022. She finally got her licence to practise in Canada after 17 months.

4. Canadian Scrabble champ wins $10K prize at Vegas tourney

Montreal’s Joshua Sokol has emerged victorious from the NASPA annual Scrabble Players Championship in Las Vegas. The 29-year-old won a “ferocious” best-of-five series to claim the title and the $10,000 prize that goes with it. On his path to victory, Sokol played several high-value words that you (and I) have likely never heard of before today.

5. British Columbians descend on Seattle for Taylor Swift, Blue Jays series

It’s the annual Toronto Blue Jays vs Seattle Mariners series in the Pacific Northwest and that means tens of thousands of British Columbians will be crossing the border to watch Canada’s team. However, they’ll be joined by several thousand Swifties, as there’s also two Taylor Swift concerts at Lumen Field on Saturday and Sunday.
