A preliminary autopsy has found that a nine-year-old Montreal girl, allegedly killed by her father in New York, was drowned. It found that Melina Frattolin died by asphyxia due to drowning and her death was a homicide, but the results will need to be confirmed by further laboratory testing. Her father Luciano Frattolin, 45, has been charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carrocia is expected to deliver her decision Thursday in the trial of Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote. The five hockey players are accused of sexual assault after an open-bar gala hosted by Hockey Canada in London, Ont., in June 2018.

The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee has effectively barred transgender women from competing in women’s sports. The Committee says it has an “obligation to comply” with President Donald Trump executive order, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” which was signed in February.

The premier of South Australia says an outbreak of toxic algae off the coast is a “natural disaster.” Peter Malinauskas says more than 400 different species of marine life have been killed off as a result of the algal bloom. First detected in March, the algal bloomspans an area of 4,500 square kilometres and environment officials says it has been aggravated by rising ocean temperatures.

A backyard pool party in Quebec nearly turned tragic after an eight-year-old girl drifted into the deep end unnoticed. She was unresponsive by the time she was pulled from the water, but Sandra Zagury, a physical education teacher, stepped in to deliver CPR. Within a minute, the girl showed signs of life and was rushed to hospital for treatment. The girl’s mother, Umananthini Shanmugarajah, was not at the party and said she will always be grateful for Zagury’s actions.
