5 things you need to know this morning: July 8, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Members of Canadian Armed Forces arrested, accused of plotting to 'forcibly take possession' of part of Quebec City

Four people – including members of the Canadian Armed Forces – have been accused by Mounties of plotting to "forcibly take possession" of a part of Quebec City. Police, who said they seized guns and explosives, claimed the group was planning to create an anti-government militia.

2. Carney enjoying vacation amid 'biggest crisis of our lifetimes'

Despite repeatedly telling Canadians the country is facing the "biggest crisis of our lifetimes," Mark Carney has found the time to enjoy a vacation. The prime minister will be holidaying somewhere in the National Capital Region, his spokesperson said, but the exact location will not be revealed. Other MPs, meanwhile, are also enjoying some rest and relaxation, with Parliament shut down on June 20 and not getting back to work until mid-September.

3. Most Canadians don't even know who NDP leadership hopefuls are: poll

While Ottawa indulges in its long summer snooze, things are not looking good for the orange team. According to a poll from Research Co., most voters don't even know who the NDP leadership hopefuls are. That comes on the heels of the party's poor election results, with its former leader, Jagmeet Singh, losing his seat.

4. Hamas used rape as 'part of a deliberate genocidal strategy' during Oct. 7 massacre: group

The Islamist terrorist group Hamas used rape as "part of a deliberate genocidal strategy" during the Oct. 7 atrocities in Israel, according to an all-female group in Israel that's demanding justice. The Dinah Project's report is based on testimony from 15 former hostages who were held in Gaza, as well as survivors of the massacre in 2023.

5. Paediatrician 'no longer employed' by Texas clinic after posts about deadly floods

A Texas paediatrician is "no longer employed" by a chain in clinics in Houston after a social media account in her name published posts wishing people in the state "get what they voted for" amid deadly flooding. Blue Fish Pediatrics said of the woman, named elsewhere as Dr. Christina Propst: "We do not support or condone any statement that politicizes tragedy, diminishes human dignity, or fails to clearly uphold compassion for every child and family, regardless of background or beliefs."
