5 things you need to know this morning: June 17, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Sikh protests planned in Calgary as Indian PM takes part in G7

Sikh protests are planned in Calgary today as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes part in the nearby G7 summit. Some Sikh groups in Canada are demanding an independent state for their coreligionists in India, something the Indian state looks upon with extreme hostility.

2. Trump departs G7 summit early after saying he'll 'work something out' with Canada

In more G7 news, the summit's star turn, Donald Trump, has left early due to the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. Trump's abrupt departure came after the president had pledged to "work something out" on trade with Canada, but added: "I'm a tariff person. I've always been a tariff (person)." Mark Carney, meanwhile, said the US and Canada will look to work out a deal within 30 days.

3. Liberals' centrepiece bill attacked by Greens, First Nations

Back on the home front, Mark Carney's centrepiece legislation, Bill C-5, is still under fire from the Liberals' opponents. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said the bill, designed to speed up infrastructure projects, represents a "new low" for Parliament, while the chief of the Anishinabek Nation said First Nations have "not been consulted" on the bill "appropriately."

4. Relatives challenge will after BC woman, 84, leaves $1M estate to 'male escort'

Relatives of an 84-year-old BC woman who left her $1 million estate to a "professional companion and male escort" have been given the green light to challenge the will in court. Janet Henry, who died in 2021, left the majority of her estate to Simon Garstin, but Henry's relatives argue she was "subjected to undue influence" by the man. Garstin has denied that claim.

5. Some Iranians flee Tehran after Trump urges residents to 'immediately evacuate'

Some Iranians have reacted with fear and shock after Donald Trump said on his Truth Social website that anyone in Tehran should "immediately evacuate" the city. One resident, writing on social media, abandoned their home, adding: "I said goodbye in silence, hoping to return one day to my beautiful safe haven."
