5 things you need to know this morning: May 28, 2025

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Liberals will take 'immediate and decisive action' to rebuild Canadian military: minister

The Liberal minority government will take "immediate and decisive action" to boost Canada's military, Defence Minister David McGuinty said today. He added that joining Europe's "ReArm Europe" scheme, announced by King Charles on Tuesday, will give Canada access to a $1.25 trillion defence market.

2. Trump says Canada could join 'Golden Dome' plan for US$61B

On the subject of defence, the ever-present Donald Trump has also been grabbing headlines after he said Canada is "considering" an offer from the US to join the "Golden Dome" missile defence plan – in exchange for US$61 billion. The American president also repeated his jibes about Canada becoming the 51st state, writing that it would cost "ZERO DOLLARS" if Canada joined the US.

3. Cop30 president says opponents of his climate policies now pushing 'economic denial'

The president of the UN's Cop30 climate change summit has coined a new term to deride opponents of his political agenda: they are guilty of "economic denial." That's because, André Corrêa do Lago explained, "there is a migration [among his opponents] from scientific denial to a denial that economic measures against climate change can be good for the economy and for people.”

4. Trudeau attracts attention during King's speech by wearing colourful shoes

Justin Trudeau didn't make any official remarks when the King delivered the speech from the throne in the Senate on Tuesday – and he barely managed to exchange more than a few words with His Majesty – but he has nonetheless succeeded in winning news coverage. That's because the former prime minister came to the solemn event in green and red sneakers, prompting displeasure among some observers.

5. Woman, 96, takes out ad in newspaper in desperate attempt to find GP

A 96-year-old woman has taken out an ad in a newspaper in a desperate attempt to find a GP. Dorothy Lamont, from Nova Scotia, said she doesn't want to be "a burden to the healthcare system" but, given her age, "time is increasingly of the essence."
