Five things you need to know

1. Two 13-year-old girls accused of stabbing teen ‘numerous times’ in Ontario

Two 13-year-old girls have been charged with assault with a weapon after a stabbing incident north of Toronto Saturday night. Police were called to a fast-food restaurant around 8 pm for reports of a disturbance involving a group of youths. Before officers could arrive, a fight ensued and a teenaged girl was stabbed, allegedly by the 13-year-olds. The victim reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

2. Clean-up efforts underway in Atlantic Canada after post-tropical storm Lee

Clean-up has begun in Atlantic Canada in the wake of post-tropical storm Lee, which was a hurricane over open waters before downgrading as it made landfall over the weekend. Tens of thousands lost power in Halifax and the storm caused plenty of property damage, but there were no reported injuries or loss of life.

3. Mike Babcock out as Blue Jackets coach amid controversy

Mike Babcock’s tenure as Columbus Blue Jackets coach was brief. The club announced Sunday that Babcock had resigned from his position before being behind the bench for a game amid a controversy that surfaced last week. He’s alleged to have violated players’ privacy by asking to see photos on their phones, which was first brought to the surface by Paul Bissonnette and the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast.

4. MPs return to Ottawa following summer break

Members of Parliament are returning to the House of Commons today after their summer break. Housing and food prices are at the top of their mind, and it’s expected that there will be some heated debates in Ottawa surrounding those issues, along with bail reform, gun restrictions and climate change.

5. LA sheriff’s deputy murdered in his patrol car

One person has been detained in connection to the murder of a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, who was shot to death in his patrol car over the weekend. Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, was shot Saturday while on duty at an intersection near the sheriff’s station in Palmdale. He had gotten engaged just four days earlier.
