Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said some recent refinery outages in Washington due to maintenance led to a spike in gas prices in recent weeks.

De Haan explained that when that unplanned outage happened, it impacted the amount of supply for summer gas, which was needed for just a few more days.

Now that refineries are back to normal operation, the transition to lower-cost winter has started, which is expected to bring some relief.

“Now that we’ve gotten to the winter gasoline transition point, the amount of available gasoline is much higher,” he explained. “The winter blend of gasoline is much easier to make.”

De Haan said that abundant supply is expected to push prices down and areas of BC that haven’t seen a drop, can expect to see lower prices in the next week or two.

The full transition, which is done in three stages, to the winter gas supply will be done in about late November-December. Things will then begin to transition back and by June 1, 2026 gas stations will only be able to sell summer gas.

As of Tuesday, the average across BC is 162.1 c/l which is actually up half a cent from Monday.

But prices are down 3.9 cents from last week’s average.

The national leverage for gas is sitting at 142.3 c/l, which is up 1 cent from Monday but down 0.9 cents from last week.
