Mounties in a small town in the Kootenays were called to investigate a potential improved explosive device (IED) earlier this month.
Police say a person found the IED while looking at a camper trailer for sale on a rural property north of Trail on Aug. 12.
The device was spotted near a pile of abandoned personal items, a news release said.
The person transported the IED to the Nelson City Police Department and turned it over to police, something authorities strongly discourage.
According to the release, the Nelson Police then contacted the Trail RCMP about the weapon around 8:44 pm.
Officers attended the property and conducted a search but did not find any other IEDs.
They also consulted with an "explosive expert” before leaving.
“Please do not pick up or transport IEDs. Call 911 and report the incident immediately,” said Sgt. Wicentowich.
“The RCMP Explosive Device Unit will attend the scene and dispose of the device. Handling the device may cause it to accidentally detonate.”
