A tragic incident in the Kootenays has claimed the life of a young boy and left another man with serious injuries.
The fatal crash between a green Kia SUV and snow plow dump truck happened on Hwy 3, just outside Castlegar, shortly after 8 am on Saturday, Dec. 7.
An eight-year-old boy in the SUV was killed in the crash, while his five-year-old brother and 44-year-old stepfather both reported minor physical injuries.
Sadly, a 57-year-old male pedestrian from Castlegar, who had stopped to assist an unrelated vehicle that drove into a ditch, suffered “life-altering injuries” after being hit by the SUV as it spun away from the dump truck.
The BC Highway Patrol says road conditions were “cold and icy with freezing rain,” and investigators are hoping the public can help piece together exactly what happened.
“We are looking for dash camera video or people who may have seen the green Kia or the yellow snow plow dump truck in the moments leading up to the crash,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.
“(The BCHP) has already spoken to multiple witnesses, but for obvious reasons we want to make sure we investigate thoroughly.”
According to police, the 65-year-old man from Castlegar who was behind the wheel of the snow plow dump truck was not injured in the collision.
Anyone with information on this fatal incident is urged to contact the BCHP’s Nelson branch at 250-354-5180.
