A woman in the BC Interior has been scammed out of several thousand dollars after being targeted by crypto-currency fraudsters earlier this woman.
On Dec. 14, the woman reported to the Salmon Arm RCMP that she had been defrauded.
According to a release from Mounties, the woman told officers that she had clicked a crypto currency ad on Google that requested her name, email address and phone number.
The woman was then contacted by a person that claimed to be a “crypto-investing agent,” who spoke with the woman over WhatsApp and convinced her to transfer $80,000 to their “website.”
Unfortunately, after the woman transferred the money to a cryptocurrency exchange, it was converted into Bitcoin and then transferred to the fraudster.
“The complainant added that she allowed the investing agent access to her computer remotely, which allowed the fraudster access to her computer and personal information,” says a release from the RMCP.
The file remains under investigation.
The Salmon RCMP say they strongly discourage people from transferring money to people they do not know because once they accept the money, it cannot be reversed.
