Bystander breaks rear window of flipped car to pull young child to safety

A young mother and her child escaped a single-vehicle crash in Trail relatively unharmed over the weekend.

The RCMP is crediting the actions of a bystander and a good car seat for the child’s positive outcome.

The roll over crash happened on Hwy 3B, on the eastern edge of Trail, around 5:30 pm on Sunday.

According to police, the car driven by a 21-year-old Salmo woman “suddenly swerved across a driving lane and into a cement barricade dividing the road.”

The impact flipped the vehicle onto its roof and it slid down the road until it slowed to a stop.

“The woman managed to exit the vehicle and told a bystander that her young child was still inside,” police explained. “The bystander broke out the rear window of the vehicle and pulled the child to safety.”

The RCMP said the woman suffered minor injuries and the child “appeared unharmed,” and both were transported to local hospital for further assessment.

“It is incredibly important to have a Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards approved car seat and it be properly installed to protect our young children,” noted Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. “Typically, your local fire department will help you install one if you need assistance.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
