Collision with elk on BC Interior highway claims life of 27-year-old motorcyclist

A man in his 20s was killed in a single-vehicle crash near Trail over the weekend.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Hwy 3B, near 10th Street in Montrose, around 4:25 am Saturday.

Police were told by witnesses that a motorcycle had hit an elk while riding on the highway.

Despite the best efforts of first responders, the rider, a 27-year-old man from Fruitvale, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is a tragic loss that will be felt deeply in a close-knit community like ours,” said S/Sgt. Dave Johnson, Trail RCMP detachment commander.

“Incidents involving wildlife can happen suddenly and with little warning, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the man’s family, friends and all those affected by this incident.”

Mounties have already determined that there was no criminality involved in the incident and, as a result, the BC Coroners Service has assumed conduct of the investigation.
