Construction-related closures resume on Hwy 1 through the Kicking Horse Canyon

Closures on Highway 1 east of Golden will resume after being fully opened over the holidays.

On Dec. 20, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure suspended the construction-related closures but the temporary closures will resume at noon on Tuesday.

People travelling through the Kicking Horse Canyon on Highway 1 can expect 30 minute closures from noon to 3 pm.

There will be no stoppages from 3 pm to 8 pm, however, the 30 minute closures resume until 10 pm.

The highway will be fully closed from 10 pm to 7 am starting on Jan. 3, 2023.

According to the construction calendar, these closures will be in place until further notice as the full calendar has not been released beyond January.

The closure applies to the fourth and final phase of the construction project, which is a 4.8 kilometre span of highway through the Kicking Horse Canyon.

“Three phases of work have transformed 21 kilometres of narrow, winding two-lane highway into a modern four-lane, 100 km/h standard,” explains the project website.

“Construction of the fourth and final phase to complete the remaining – and most difficult – 4.8 kilometres is expected to be substantially complete in winter 2023-24.”
