Copper Mountain Mine, located about 20 kilometres south of Princeton, suffered a ransomware attack late last month, which forced a preventative closure of the mine.
In a news release, the company says the mine and corporate office were attacked on Dec. 27, 2022.
“The company quickly implemented its risk management systems and protocols in response to the attack,” says the news release
“The company isolated operations, switched to manual process, where possible, and the mill have been preventatively shutdown to determine the effect on its control system.”
Internal and external IT teams continue to assess any risks and are working to establish additional safeguards to avoid any further risk, adds the news release.
Local authorities are investigating the incident and working to determine the source of the attack.
The company says there have been no safety or environmental incidents as a result of the attack and their main focus is to continue to ensure safe operations at the mine and limit operational and financial impacts.
The mine produces an estimated 100 million pounds of copper each year.
