A human-caused interface wildfire was quickly doused near Merritt Thursday night.
According to the Merritt Fire Rescue, the fire was reported along Lookout Access Road off Juniper Drive, which is just west of the city.
Although the fire was small (about half a hectare), it was highly visible to the community.
The fire also started close to homes, the fire department said in a news release.
A total of 19 firefighters were dispatched to the fire shortly after 11:30 pm with support from a BC Wildfire Service initial attack crew.
The fire was declared under control and clear by 1 am, the department said in its news release.
Further investigation has determined that the fire consisted of a pile of burning pallets, which then ignited the surrounding grass and brush.
“This fire on the west side of the city had the potential to spread rapidly, and we’re fortunate it was reported quickly and brought under control before it escalated,” said Fire Chief David Tomkinson.
“The presence of burning pallets is deeply concerning.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Merritt RCMP.
The City of Merritt reminds its residents and all visitors that category two and three open fires are banned across the Kamloops Fire Centre.
Campfires are still permitted within Merritt city limits but a valid permit is required.
