Kayaker seen in distress in Chase Creek found dead 20 hours later

A man who was seen in distress while kayaking in Chase Creek on Sunday was tragically found dead the next day.

Police were informed of the man around 4 pm Sunday and quickly contacted search and rescue crews.

“Witnesses reported that a male clinging to an overturned kayak was being swept toward the South Thompson River,” explained Cst. Sarah Van Wilgenburg.

Shuswap Search and Rescue combed the area extensively throughout the evening on Sunday, but the man was not located.

They resumed their search early Monday with help from Kamloops Search and Rescue.

Unfortunately, the kayaker was found dead around noon on Monday.

“Chase RCMP would like to express their condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” noted Wilgenburg.

The man’s identity has been confirmed and his family has been notified of his death.
