Kids aged 5 and 8 found by BC RCMP after leaving home to visit friend 30 km away

Eventually, every parent watches their child leave home to pursue their dreams, but usually it happens once they’ve finished high school.

It’s typically an emotional time for parents when that happens, but it’s a whole different set of emotions when children leave home when they’re five or eight years old.

That’s what happened in the Kootenays last Friday night leading into the Labour Day long weekend.

<who>Photo Credit: Google Maps</who>It's a 30 km journey from Trail to Castlegar, one that takes around half an hour in a vehicle and 6 hours by foot.

According to the Trail RCMP, they were notified around 8:15 pm that a five-year-old boy and eight-year-old girl from Trail had wandered away from their residences in the 1900 block of 7 Avenue.

Officers immediately began conducting patrols in an attempt to find the missing children and fortunately they were located unharmed in downtown Trail.

“The children were apparently trying to get to Castlegar to visit one of their friends,” explained a release from the Trail RCMP.

“An RCMP officer spoke to the children about the dangers of leaving their homes without an adult. The boy and girl returned safely home to their relieved parents.”

This incident ended in a positive way, but it’s a great reminder of the importance of parents speaking to their young children about not leaving home alone and on their own accord.
