Mother and daughter from Salmon Arm, both hospital workers, win $500K lotto prize

A quick stop for licorice at a gas station local gas station turned into a whole lot more for a mother and daughter duo from Salmon Arm.

While Theresa Worthington and her daughter Alexa, who are both hospital workers, bought their licorice, Theresa remembered they needed to check a lottery ticket they purchased together.

They scanned their ticket for the Feb. 8 Daily Grand draw on the self-checker, but the prize amount didn’t show up on the screen, so they waited for the retailer to check it.

That’s when they found out that they matched five numbers to win the secondary prize for the draw, a cool $500,000.

“We couldn’t believe it and still don’t really believe it yet,” Theresa said, adding that the first person they told was her husband.

“He thought I was lying at first. Then he noticed I was shaking really bad so he realized it must be real! To calm down I decided to bake some cookies for the dogs, and then some for us to enjoy with milk to celebrate.”

Theresa loves to bake, which is why she has her eyes set on a new kitchen table with some of the prize money.

Both mother and daughter are also eyeing a trip to Australia once it’s safe to travel again.

The winning ticket was purchased from Orchard Park Mall in Kelowna.
