Passengers survive helicopter crash that killed pilot in the Kootenays

One person is dead after a helicopter crash south of Invermere on Tuesday night.

Emergency crews were notified about the crash in the area of Brewer Creek around 7 pm.

Unfortunately, the pilot of the privately-owned helicopter, who police say was a local ranch owner, was killed in the crash.

“Search and rescue crews were deployed to the area and located the helicopter, and sadly the pilot who was deceased,” explained Cpl. James Grandy.

There were also two passengers on board when the chopper went down, and the RCMP says both escaped the crash with non-life-threatening injuries.

They were taken to hospital and there’s no update on their condition.

Grandy says the Columbia Valley RCMP is assisting the BC Coroners Service and Transportation Safety Board with the ongoing investigation.

That investigation is in its early stages, however, and police are not releasing any further details, including the identity of the pilot, at this time.
