BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says permanent repairs are coming for a section of Hwy 8 that was damaged by flooding nearly three years ago.
In November 2021, the highway between Merritt and Spences Bridge was damaged in 22 different areas following the atmospheric river that caused devastating flooding throughout the BC Interior.
The province started the procurement process in March to find a company to carry out the design and construction work.
On Thursday, the province said Aecon-Emil Anderson Construction General Partnership (AEGP) with their design partners, Urban Systems and Basis Engineering, will begin design work this summer.
The project will include replacing two temporary structures with permanent bridges and rebuilding around three kilometres of highway.
Construction on a section about 15 kilometres east of Spences Bridge is expected to begin this fall or early 2025.
A community newsletter says design work for permanent repairs on damaged sites one to eight is completed and construction will begin this fall.
Construction on sites 20 to 22 will also begin later this year.
Procurement work for sites nine and 10 is underway.
“Permanent repairs at all remaining sites will begin in Spring 2025, with construction staggered until all work is completed in Winter 2027,” the newsletter notes.
