A man driving erratically on Hwy 22 near Trail over the weekend is believed to have been impaired, but not by drugs or alcohol.
Reports about the man’s erratic driving first came in shortly before 6 pm on Saturday, Nov. 30, and a Trail RCMP officer was dispatched to locate the car.
The officer eventually tracked down the vehicle in a Trail parking lot and found a 76-year-old Fruitvale man behind the wheel.
According to police, a strong odor of gasoline was detected and the officer sourced the scent to a full gas can inside the vehicle.
He reached the conclusion that the gas fumes had impacted the senior’s ability to drive and instructed him to remove the gas can from the vehicle before continuing his journey.
The driver complied with the officer’s request and elected to find an alternate safe ride home.
“Gas fumes can cause driving impairment and worse,” explained Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. “Gasoline should be secured in a safe location when transported by vehicle, as well as not leaking fumes into the inner compartments.”
The driver was issued a $368 fine for Drive without Due Car under the BC Motor Vehicle Act.
