The RCMP says it’s aware of the widespread discussions on social media about drinks being spiked with drugs in the Kootenays.
According to police, the alleged incidents involve people having their drinks spiked with drugs like Ketamine or GHB while at local establishments.
There have been four reports to the RCMP about drinks being spiked in Fernie in December and January, although none of the reported cases have been confirmed by blood or lab work.
Two of the four files remain open investigations, an RCMP release noted.
“These substances can be very dangerous, particularly when combined with alcohol, as they can cause sedation, memory loss, and even unconsciousness,” said Sgt. Brad Gregory.
“We encourage everyone to take steps to protect themselves and their friends, such as watching their drinks closely, never accepting drinks from strangers and sticking together in social settings.”
While police are urging people to report any suspicious incidents at local bars, at least one establishment has gone public with measures to try and curb this concerning behaviour.
In a post to social media on Tuesday, the Northern Bar & Stage in Fernie said it is aware of recent incidents of drink spiking in the community.
“The safety and well-being of our patrons and staff is our number one priority,” the post explained.
While the bar has spoken with the RCMP regarding this investigation, it has also taken its own steps to improve safety for patrons who are trying to enjoy a drink or night out.
They include:
The bar also shared three posters with important information on the subject, including what to watch out for and how to help if you see something suspicious.
The RCMP is urging anyone with information related to this investigation to contact either the Sparwood (250-425-6233) or Fernie (250-423-4404) detachments.
