After a 20-year-old man died while on a ski trip with his family at Red Mountain earlier this month, police have revealed more information about the tragic incident.
Trail RCMP officers responded to the report of a sudden death at the ski hill in Rossland around 4 pm on Friday, March 7.
Investigators have learned that the Port Coquitlam man was skiing with his family, but decided to take a different path down a run than the rest of the group.
When he didn’t rejoin his family a short time later, they contacted ski patrol and members began to search the area where he was last seen.
“Patrollers located the man who was unresponsive after a piece of the man’s ski equipment had become entangled in a tree and restricted his ability to breathe,” explained a Trail RCMP release.
Ski patrol members tried to revive the man at the scene before he was transported down the mountain and into the care of paramedics.
Sadly, he did not survive his injuries.
“Our most sincere condolences to his family and friends after this very tragic and sudden event,” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
Red Mountain addressed the incident with a social media post the day after it happened, expressing “heartfelt condolences” to the man’s family and loved ones as well.
The resort confirmed the man’s death happened while he was skiing in bounds and extended gratitude to the ski patrol team for their professional and dedicated response.
