A shooting in Revelstoke that left a man dead in 2023 has been referred to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
The shooting happened on Aug. 27, 2023 after police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle.
On Tuesday, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC’s chief civilian director Jessica Berglund said there was reasonable grounds to believe that one officer may have committed offences.
An RCMP officer found the man driving the stolen vehicle, there was an interaction and shots were fired by police.
Emergency Health Services attended but the man who had been driving the stolen vehicle was later pronounced dead.
At the time of the shooting, the RCMP said when they attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, there was a minor collision.
After the collision, the man got out of the car and, after a brief foot chase, reportedly tried to jump into a police vehicle.
After reviewing the evidence, the IIO said an offence relating to the use of police force may have occurred.
“In order to approve any charges, the BC Prosecution Service must be satisfied that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO, and that prosecution be required in the public interest,” the IIO said.
No additional comments will be made as the matter is reviewed by the courts.
