Province invests in organic waste infrastructure and collection programs in Interior

Twenty-three organic waste projects will soon be introduced to communities across British Columbia.

Each project will be funded from a $12.48 million investment through the CleanBC Organic Infrastructure and Collection Program.

A few of the residential organics collection projects in the Interior to receive funding include:

  • City of Kamloops – $1.78 million to expand the current pilot project to include 27,000 homes

  • City of Vernon – Over $930,000 to introduce a new food and yard waste collection program that will serve 14,000 homes

  • District of Summerland – Over $450,000 to expand the existing yard waste collection program to include food waste for composting

  • Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen – Nearly $305,000 to develop a brand new yard and food waste collection program to serve households in electoral areas A and C, and the Osoyoos Indian Band.

  • Town of Fernie – Nearly $177,000 for a new yard and food waste collection program

The program was launched last year and will provide nearly $26 million over three years to develop or expand organics waste solutions.

According to the news release, “organic waste represents 40% of material sent to municipal landfills in BC and generates 3.5% of the province’s greenhouse gas emissions.”

More projects are expected to come on board in the near future while these initial projects are expected to begin in early 2022.
