Next up for the massive, multi-year four-laning project on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is a 2.6-kilometre section of the route east of Revelstoke.
BC’s Ministry of Transportation has issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for the design and construction of the project between Jumping Creek and MacDonald Snowshed.
Not only will the highway be widened, but safety will be improved through the inclusion of a centre median and roadside barriers.
The Province says this will reduce frequency and severity of collisions, as well as avalanche and rockfall mitigation.
“Congestion will be reduced by the addition of a safe passing opportunity,” noted a release from the Ministry. “The project will also make the highway more resilient to extreme-weather events.”
The RFQ will be followed by an invite for a short list of qualified teams to participate in a request for proposals (RFP).
The estimated project budget is more than $245 million, with the Province contributing nearly $200 million to that number. The federal government will throw in $45.7 million as part of the New Building Canada Fund.
At this time, it’s anticipated the contract will be awarded in the fall of 2024 and construction will begin by the spring of 2025.
