A 29-year-old man from Quebec has received a new round of charges related to a shooting incident at the Trail hospital earlier this fall.
Francis Paradis is now facing an attempted murder charge for an incident that took place at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital on Oct. 25.
Seven charges have been approved including attempted murder, assault of a police officer, two counts of using a restricted or prohibited firearm, possession of a firearm contrary to an order, possession of a firearm without a licence and having a firearm with readily available access to ammunition.
Paradis was originally charged with several firearm related offences, however, the new charges were announced on Dec. 5, according to court documents.
The incident involved Mounties in Trail responding to a report of a man acting erratically near the hospital.
When officers located the man standing in a dark area just outside the ambulance station and attempted to speak with the man, he allegedly fired several rounds from a handgun at the two responding officers and three nearby paramedics.
No one was hurt or injured, however, an officer had to use their taser to subdue the man so he could be taken into custody.
“I am thankful that no one was hurt or killed in this incident. I would like to commend the bravery of the officers and paramedics who risk their lives and safety in the line of duty during a potentially deadly situation,” said Sgt. Wicentowich with the Trail RCMP, in a news release from October.
Paradis is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 8, 2023.
