Smoke to stick around Kelowna, Kamloops, Penticton and Vernon until at least Wednesday

A large portion of the Southern Interior will be impacted by smoke during the first half of the week.

Environment Canada said the smoke that has moved into regions like the Shuswap, Okanagan and Thompson-Nicola is expected to stick around until Tuesday or Wednesday.

However, wildfire smoke can change quickly over short distances so the conditions may vary hour-by-hour.

Impacted areas include:

  • Central Okanagan: Kelowna, Lake Country, West Kelowna and Peachland.

  • North Okanagan: Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby, Lavington and Lumby.

  • South Okanagan: Penticton, Summerland, Naramata, Keremeos, Oliver and Osoyoos.

  • North Thompson: Barriere, Clearwater and Vavenby.

  • Shuswap: Salmon Arm, Sicamous, and Chase.

  • Arrow Lakes - Slocan Lake: Slocan, New Denver, Nakusp, and Fauquier.

  • Boundary: Grand Forks, Midway and Greenwood.

  • Kootenay Lake: Creston and Kaslo.

  • West Columbia: Revelstoke.

  • West Kootenay: Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland.

As smoke levels increase, Environment Canada says health risks also increase so people are encouraged to limit their time outdoors if possible.

“You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough,” Environment Canada said.

“More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.”
