Mounties in the BC Interior are probing a suspicious fire at a Smithers hotel that caused significant damage to multiple vehicles.
According to the RCMP, a total of eight vehicles, including four police cars and an ambulance, were destroyed in the blaze early this morning.
“This appears to be a targeted attack on emergency services vehicles,” said Cpl. Madonna Saunderson.
“Preliminary investigation indicates this is an arson and we are asking for the public's assistance in providing information so that the person, or persons involved may be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Emergency crews were called to the Sunshine Inn in the 3800 block of 4 Avenue shortly before 4:30 am today.
Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control without it spreading and causing damage to the hotel, and Saunderson confirmed that there were no injuries reported.
The RCMP is now investigating the suspicious fire and turning to the public in hopes of identifying further witnesses or relevant CCTV footage.
“Police are particularly interested in obtaining any dash cam video from individuals traveling between Houston and Smithers and New Hazelton and Smithers between the hours of 1-6 am on Oct. 26,” noted an RCMP release.
Anyone who can assist with this investigation is urged to contact the Smithers RCMP at 250-847-3233.
