A teenager is dead after a tragic hiking incident on Bastion Mountain.
The 17-year-old male was reportedly hiking in the recreational area north of Salmon Arm with two other teens on Monday when he disappeared near the top of a 200-foot cliff.
According to police, he was walking ahead of his two friends and is believed to have slipped and fallen.
One of the friends’ fathers located the victim unresponsive at the base of the cliff and the Salmon Arm RCMP was called to the scene shortly before 6 pm.
Search and rescue crews responded to the area, rappelled down to the teen and confirmed that he did not survive the fall.
The BC Coroners Service is investigating the circumstances around the young hiker’s untimely death.
“We’re deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a young life,” said S/Sgt. Simon Scott. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and all those impacted by this devastating event.”
He called the youth’s death “another tragic event” that will greatly affect the local community. In February, an 18-year-old died after falling through the ice while fishing on Shuswap Lake.
