This miniature museum has been a staple in the Southern Okanagan since 2003.
The 4000 square foot space is home to 45 computer controlled trains, over 1,900 houses, and 19,000 hand-painted little people. It's quite the site to see.
Poul and Ulla Pedersen, owners of the Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad say that it was a hard decision to come to, but both are ready for retirement.
“After 18 years of having fun running the business, it is time for a new chapter in our lives. Retirement is calling us, and with all the restrictions put on us by the government due to COVID, it is very hard to be a small business owner,” said the Pedersen’s.
Poul started collecting and assembling trains in the 1970’s in Denmark, and after he married Ulla and had their first child, Lotte, they packed up their models and moved to Canada in the 80’s.
There in Osoyoos, they worked as a team to follow their big dreams and create the magical scene’s that you see today.
The largest Marklin layout in North America has been featured in articles, magazines, and tv programs like the Amazing Race Canada, but the couple has been most grateful for their loyal customers.
“Some have come to visit us faithfully every year on their holidays in Osoyoos since we opened our doors in 2003. Others have found their way from all around the world, and it has been a joy to meet all of you,” said the Pedersen’s
You can still check out this hidden gem before it closes, but keep your eyes peeled for some of the cheeky little scenes hidden among the beautifully designed landscape.
There’s also 26 interactive exhibits that will trigger by placing your hand in front of a sensor.
The biggest little European Railroad in Canada, will be closing its doors September 7.
