UPDATE: Massive Kamloops wildfire now 'under control'

(UPDATE: July 3 @ 11:15 am): Kamloops Fire Rescue and the BCWS now have the east interface fire in the city "under control."

“We are very happy with what we are seeing right now."

"After combined ground and aircrew efforts that occurred Friday afternoon, KFR and BC Wildfire Service personnel remained on site overnight Friday to monitor the area. The conditions remained stable throughout the night."

The public can expect to see more personnel on scene to extinguish hot spots.

(Original Story: July 3 @ 9:30 am) Kamloops Fire Rescue and members of the BC Wildfire Service continue to battle fires throughout Kamloops' east side.

According to the City of Kamloops, the Kamloops East Interface fire was held through the night on Friday. The most heavily fuelled areas have been mitigated and the perimeter of the blaze has been tightened.

"We are seeing relief on this fire, with the most aggressive hot spots tamped down,” said Kamloops Fire Rescue Chief Steve Robinson.

The BCWS has multiple aircrafts dumping water on the blaze. There is still no need for an evacuation order in the city.

"The City has requested additional resources from the Province of BC, should they be needed, with equipment arriving in Kamloops Saturday morning."

Additional resources include structure protection units coming to the city to ensure no homes get lost.

"The Kamloops East interface fire, adjacent to parts of the Valleyview and Juniper Ridge neighborhoods, flared up on Friday afternoon. The fires were caused by numerous lightning strikes in the Kamloops area Thursday night."

NowMedia will update the story when more information is available.
