BC reports 2,960 COVID cases over the weekend as hospitalizations continue to rise

Health officials reported 2,960 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend.

Of those new cases, 696 cases were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 1,845 in Fraser Health, 108 in Island Health, 211 in Interior Health and 100 in Northern Health.

There are currently 441 people in hospital, an increase of 73 patients from last week, with 138 people in intensive care, an increase of 17 patients.

Another eight deaths were attributed to the virus over the weekend, bringing BC's death toll to 1,530.

One of those deaths was a two year old child, marking the youngest person who has died from COVID-19 in BC.

Premier John Horgan also announced that new travel restrictions are coming this Friday.

The province will be conducting roadside checks to ensure people are not traveling outside their given health authorities.

Those not conducting essential travel will be subject to fines.

People in BC aged 40 and over are now eligible for the AstraZeneca vaccine through pharmacies.
