Apricot seeds recalled over cyanide poisoning concerns

A brand of apricot seeds has been recalled over fears it could cause cyanide poisoning.

Ecoideas Innovations Inc. is taking its Apricot Power Bitter Raw Apricot Seeds and Apricot Seed Meal products off the shelves immediately.

The products contain an “incorrect dosage” of the toxin amygdalin.

Bitter apricot kernels naturally contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide when ingested.

Small amounts can be detoxified by the human body, but high quantities can be deadly.

Announcing the recall, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned: “Consumers should not consume the recalled products described below as they have incorrect dosage information and excessive consumption may cause cyanide poisoning.”

The agency added: “Symptoms of acute exposure to high levels of cyanide may include headache, dizziness, mental confusion, weakness, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, seizures and coma.”

The CFIA is now conducting an investigation.
